Swinton Car Insurance warns that ignorant UK public make unnecessary claims

Swinton Car Insurance have noted in a recent survey commissioned for their car insurance clients that a number of British drivers are making claims on their policies when there is nothing to claim for.

According to Swinton the UK driving public are knowledge deficient in the following areas, which effectively puts us all at risk and pushes up the cost of cheap car insurance:

1. understanding elementary parts of a motor car - 36% !
2. unable to change a tyre - 29% !
3. unaware that they regularly have to check their tyre pressures and are unable to do it - a staggering 20 % or one fith of the UK driving population!
4. Given the above it willl be no surprise to learn that 9% admitted to not knowing how to open the bonnet of their car.

Who'd be an AA serviceman!
Obviously the technical part of the current driving test does not appear to be working. Whether this is evidence that lack of technical knowledge of the operating systems of a modern car leads to an increase in car insurance claims - remains to be seen!

Steve Chelton of Swinton Car Insurance said-
"All drivers should have at least basic knowledge of their cars and should not rely on other people to carry out maintenance work such as checking tyres and topping up oil.

"If drivers had a better understanding of their cars they probably wouldn't make so many unnecessary claims which can lead to an increase in car insurance premiums."

Save 80% on your car insurance - prices guaranteed!

Eighty percent savings on your existing car insurance at renewal - guaranteed!

80% off my car insurance - No I don't Believe it!

Well in the not so distant future this may well be the headlines that greet you on your TV set or computer, when a new criminal intelligence system is rolled out by certain participating car insurance companies.

The car insurance companies using the system will most certainly be offering big big discounts to get you to sign up!

Why?

The system effectively stops uninsured driving, allows insurance companies to eliminate many of the car insurance claims bottlenecks and at the same time provides police with the physical location of an insured vehicle, whenever they have reason to suspect otherwise.

By matching known locations of vehicles taken from Automatic Number Plate Recognition Systems (ANPRS) which are attached to streaming live video taken from multiple camera location sources, a datastream interrogates the Motor Insurance Database (MID).

The new system works by comparing known positons of registered vehicles.

When you sign up to the massive car insurance discounts policy, you will need to register a device that has GPS streaming output capability. Such devices are Pay as You Go (PAYG) insurance boxes, MOT Road Charging boxes, Mobile phones or any other GPS device with output streaming capability that can be permanently associated with the car. That's the only catch! Unless you include privacy, human rights, big brother society etc. etc. ....

Like it or not the economics of this system will ensure it is delivered!

Here's how it works!
When a request is made to the MID by the Police, either from an officer in the field or triggered by an APNRS, those car insurance policies that have signed up to the 'Security discount', will have the current GPS position returned to the police.
The policyholder for the registration number of the registered GPS device for their car is 'pinged'.

What is known as 'GPS pinging' is a request for a serial datastream of GPS coordinates, from the registered device, which gives the cars current GPS position. The coordinate datastream is retrieved to the MID and available instantly to the police.
If there is a mismatch in the serial numbers - Bingo you've got yoursef false numberplates!
The whole system is automated and can instantly flag up to the nearest patrol car the location of the car with false number plates.

Watch out billy burglars and car insurance fraudsters!

Big Brother is soon to be Watching!

Outraged Car insurance purchasers!

As part of the research we are carrying out for Obsydium Productions 'Car Insurance from Hell' we have been trawling various forums on the Internetto get a real feel of what the UK public actually, think of the car insurance that is offered to them, and what happpens to them when things go wrong.

We found this incredibly useful post surprisingly enough over on a gaming site at http://www.eurogamer.net/forum_thread_posts.php?thread_id=112258

Warning the post contains some very strong language, but we feel it has merit in some of the advice given, particularly that from ex car insurance brokers, which is very useful! The post also shows just how inequitable the current system is. It appears that claiming on a car insurance poloicy is bit like trying to get a penalty from a ref after he's decided the opposite, even though the cameras showed it was a penalty.

Nobody ever said Car Insurance was a fair and equitable product - the public have always mistakenly assumed that it was, that is until something goes wrong with a claim!

What is Car Insurance No Claims Discount and Bonus?

Here's a great new post from our resident expert:-

Understanding Car Insurance No Claims Discount and Bonus
By Dave Healey

Car Insurance No Claims Discount and Bonus Explained

If you are a young driver or an older new driver who has never purchased a car insurance policy before, you may well have heard of but not be aware of the meaning of the terms 'No Claims Discount' or 'No Claims Bonus'. Most certainly when you first take out car insurance it is highly unlikely that the concept of these discounts was not explained to you, as they are not applicable in the first year of a car insurance policy. Essentially the two terms are the same and mean that for every year of claims free driving you will receive a discount on the following year's car insurance premium. The discount is the amount as a percentage that will be allowed against the car insurance premium you pay, the Bonus concept of the number of years without claims expressed as an amount. The two terms are interchangeable as you may often see the expression NCD or NCB used throughout a car insurance policy key facts document.

Rewarding Good Driving with Cheap Car Insurance

The amount of the no claims discount will vary from company to company and is usually larger in the first few years, possibly even thirty percent in year two, and decreases over each subsequent year up to a fixed number of years, usually five or six. When you have achieved five or six years of driving without having made a claim you are said to have accrued 'Maximum No claims Bonus'. Each and every Car Insurance Company will have a limit on the number of years it will allow you to build towards your maximum no claim period. The amount it will discount against the premium for someone who has maximum no claims is usually around sixty percent but with some specialised car insurers this can be higher, sometimes seventy percent or higher as these companies have a better 'risk pool' of similar drivers or vehicles covered, and though better knowledge of the market can adjust their rates accordingly.

Protecting Your Good Driving Record

If you have managed to get through five or six years without having to make a claim against your car insurance policy you will be offered the chance to protect your car insurance No Claims Bonus that you have built up with something called Maximum NCD protection. For a small additional premium you will be offered protection for your Bonus years which means that in the event of an accident where you are forced to claim, your subsequent year's premiums will not be increased. When considering whether to purchase this additional cover it is well worth remembering that even if you have a no fault accident in year six of your driving, that forces you to make a claim due to the high cost of repairs to your car, your car insurance premiums the following year will rise by at least thirty percent and with some Car Insurance companies this can be much more. Maximum No Claims Bonus protection is a relatively new cover introduced within the last twenty years, no so much as a feature of choice from the Car Insurers, but moreover a necessity to tie existing customers into another year of policy contract, when the policy is due for renewal. This device worked well in early years however with the advent of claims databases and Car Insurance Companies exchanging data between themselves, it has become increasingly easier to transfer earned 'No Claims' years to another Car Insurer, who will in turn honor offer protection for this discount. You will usually be asked to provide 'proof of no claims bonus' in the form of a renewal offer letter if you renew your car insurance policy with a different insurer, or if you decide to cancel your current policy and change cover 'mid-term', you can ask the old company to provide a 'standard letter' of proof.

As with every insurance decision you need to weigh up the cost of purchasing this additional cover against the likelihood of a claim and the personal cost to yourself if you are forced to make a car insurance claim.
